Anxiety symptoms checklist

Anxiety is not only in the mind. It can also show up in the body as tension, poor sleep, sweating or a racing stomach. Tick the signs that fit you lately. The list is drawn from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Just for reflection and learning — not a test or a diagnosis.

Common questions

What are common symptoms of anxiety?

NIMH lists worrying too much about everyday things, trouble controlling worry, feeling on edge or restless, trouble concentrating, poor sleep, tiredness, aches and tension, trembling, sweating, lightheadedness and frequent trips to the bathroom.

Can anxiety cause physical symptoms?

Yes. Headaches, muscle aches, stomach aches, sweating, shaking and feeling out of breath can all come with anxiety. Because other health problems can cause them too, it is wise to see a doctor.

When should I get help for anxiety?

If worry is hard to control, lasts for weeks, or gets in the way of daily life, sleep or relationships, talk with your doctor or a mental health professional. The GAD-7 anxiety test is a good place to start.
