Common questions
How is depression different in older adults?
Older adults may not feel or say they are sad. NIMH notes they may report a lack of feelings instead, and Korea's national mental health portal says complaints about the body, poor sleep and memory problems are common. Medical conditions and pain can also add to depression.
Could it be dementia instead?
Severe depression can cause memory and thinking problems that look like dementia, according to MedlinePlus and NIMH. A doctor can help sort out the cause, and depression often improves with treatment.
What should I do if I am worried about a parent?
Gently share what you have noticed, offer to help book a doctor visit, and keep in touch. If they talk about wanting to die, call or text 988 in the US, or 109 in Korea. In an emergency, call 911 or 119.
