Burnout warning signs checklist
Burnout builds slowly, so it is easy to miss. Tick the signs that fit you lately. The list is drawn from the World Health Organization's description of burnout and from Mayo Clinic and HelpGuide.

Common questions
What is burnout?
The World Health Organization describes burnout as a result of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It has three parts: feeling exhausted, feeling distant or cynical about your job, and feeling less effective. WHO lists it as an occupational phenomenon, not a medical condition.
Is burnout the same as depression?
No, but they can look alike and can happen together. Burnout is tied to work stress. Depression affects all parts of life. If low mood, loss of interest or hopelessness last two weeks or more, take a depression check-in and talk with a doctor.
Can caregivers or retirees get burnout?
WHO uses the word burnout only for work. But caregivers and volunteers often feel the same exhaustion and strain. If that is you, the caregiver stress signs and caregiver burnout pages may fit better.
