Elder abuse warning signs checklist

Elder abuse can be physical, emotional, sexual or financial, or it can be neglect. It often goes unnoticed. Think of an older person you know and tick what you have seen. The list is drawn from the National Center on Elder Abuse, the National Institute on Aging and the Administration for Community Living.

Just for reflection and learning — not a test or a diagnosis.

Common questions

What are the signs of elder abuse?

Signs include unexplained injuries, bedsores, weight loss, missing glasses or walkers, poor hygiene, unsafe living conditions, new fear or withdrawal, sudden money problems, odd signatures, and a caregiver who belittles or controls the person. One sign alone does not prove abuse, but a pattern is worth acting on.

Do I need proof before I report elder abuse?

No. The Administration for Community Living says it is not your role to verify that abuse is happening, only to share your concern. Adult Protective Services in the US, or 1577-1389 in Korea, will look into it.

What if this is happening to me?

You deserve to be safe, and it is not your fault. Tell your doctor or someone you trust. In the US, call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 to reach Adult Protective Services. In Korea, call 1577-1389. In danger, call 911 or 112.
