Signs of borderline personality disorder: checklist

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) mostly affects how a person handles strong emotions, relationships and their sense of self. Tick the signs that have been true for you for a long time. The list is based on NIMH, NHS and Mayo Clinic. It cannot diagnose BPD, and BPD is treatable: many people get much better.

Just for reflection and learning — not a test or a diagnosis.

Common questions

What are the main signs of borderline personality disorder?

Common signs include strong fear of abandonment, intense and unstable relationships, a shifting sense of self, impulsive actions, fast mood swings, feeling empty, intense anger, feeling unreal under stress, and self-harm or suicidal thoughts. Not everyone has all of them.

Can borderline personality disorder be treated?

Yes. Talk therapy is the main treatment. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was developed for BPD, and mentalization-based therapy also helps. Over time, many people with BPD overcome their symptoms.

Can I use this checklist to tell if someone I know has BPD?

No. This checklist is only for reflecting on yourself, and only a trained professional can diagnose BPD. If you are worried about someone, our page on helping someone with a personality disorder has ideas.

What should I do if I have thoughts of suicide?

Reach out now. In the US, call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency. In Korea, call 109, or 119 in an emergency.
