Signs of autism in adults: checklist

Autism can be diagnosed at any age, and some adults learned long ago to hide their signs. Autism is not an illness; it is a different way of experiencing the world. Tick the traits that have been true for you for most of your life. The list is drawn from the NHS and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Just for reflection and learning — not a test or a diagnosis.

Common questions

What are the signs of autism in adults?

The NHS lists signs such as finding it hard to talk to people or read facial expressions and tone of voice, taking things literally, having fixed routines and getting upset by change, very focused interests, repeated movements (stimming), and being very sensitive, or not sensitive at all, to light, sound, smells, tastes or textures.

Why is autism in women often missed?

The NHS says signs can be harder to see in women because of masking: they may copy how others behave, seem to cope well socially and hide their feelings. Men can mask too. Masking can make daily life feel exhausting.

Can you be diagnosed with autism as an older adult?

Yes. NIMH says autism can be diagnosed at any age. Diagnosis in adults is often harder, but it can help people understand past challenges and find the right support. A doctor can refer you for an assessment.

Is this checklist an autism test?

No. It is for reflection only and cannot tell you whether you are autistic. Only a trained professional can diagnose autism.
