Warning-sign checklist

Am I overthinking?

Thinking a problem through is useful. Overthinking is going round and round without getting anywhere, through worry about what might happen or rumination about what already did. Tick the signs that fit you. The list is drawn from Cleveland Clinic, the NHS and NIMH.

Just for reflection and learning — not a test or a diagnosis.

Common questions

Is overthinking a mental illness?

No. Overthinking is not a diagnosis. But constant, hard-to-control worry can be a sign of anxiety. If it gets in the way of sleep or daily life, talk with a doctor or therapist.

What is the difference between rumination and worry?

Rumination usually means going over a problem or the past again and again with no resolution. Worry usually looks ahead to what might go wrong. Both keep the mind busy without solving anything.

How can I stop overthinking?

Notice when it starts, and ask if there is something practical you can do. If so, make a plan. If not, shift your focus. A daily worry time, writing worries down, mindfulness, exercise and less caffeine can all help.
