Common questions

What is respite care?

Short-term care that gives the main caregiver a break, from a few hours to several weeks. It can be at home, in a facility or at an adult day care center.

Does Medicare pay for respite care?

For a person in hospice, Medicare covers most of the cost of up to five days in a row of respite care in a hospital or nursing facility. Most private health plans do not cover respite care.

Where can caregivers find help?

In the U.S., call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 or ask your local Area Agency on Aging. Tell your own doctor you are a caregiver, too.
