Common questions
How much exercise helps depression?
Any amount helps more than none. Guidelines suggest 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, and a large review found even half that amount was linked with a lower risk of depression.
What is the best exercise for depression?
A 2024 review of 218 trials found walking or jogging, yoga and strength training all helped, with yoga and strength training the easiest to stick with.
Can exercise replace antidepressants or therapy?
Researchers say exercise could be considered alongside therapy and medicine. Do not stop a treatment on your own; talk with your doctor first.
