Autism: myth or fact?

How common is autism? Why is it missed in women? Can you be diagnosed at 60? Ten questions, some harder than they look, checked against CDC, NIMH, NHS and WHO.

Just for reflection and learning — not a test or a diagnosis.

Common questions

How common is autism?

In CDC's 2022 data from 16 U.S. communities, about 1 in 31 eight-year-olds had been identified with autism. It was about 3.4 times as common in boys as in girls.

Can adults, even older adults, be diagnosed with autism?

Yes. NIMH says autism can be diagnosed at any age. It is often harder in adults, but a diagnosis can help people understand past challenges and find support.

Do vaccines cause autism?

No. WHO says research over many years shows the MMR vaccine does not cause autism, and the study that claimed it did was withdrawn. The NHS says autism is not caused by vaccines.

Is this quiz an autism test?

No. It is for learning only. If you wonder whether you might be autistic, see the WhySigh signs checklist and talk with a doctor or a trained professional.
